Life is like a game of golf

Now as you all of you may know – I am not really a sports person…

In fact I get sweaty palms at the thought of walking fast!!!

BUT – I do have to say – that I have come up with a fantastic analogy of how life works – by using Golf…. Yes – Golf

So – think about it…

Golf is all about hitting a ball from one point to another – the aim is to get it in a hole.

How do you do that?

Well – you select a club that you think will hit it – firstly – the furthest – as the first shot is always the longest…

Then when you find where you landed, and hopefully, on the fairway and not in the bushes!!! You select another club that gives you precision – as you want to get as close to the hole as you can get.

Then when you’re on the green – you select a putter to get it into the hole…

Sounds easy?

Well – it’s not…

There’s more to it than just hitting the ball…

BUT the thought process is exactly like we make decisions in life to get from one goal to another..

Firstly we dissect where we want to go and the best way of getting there – a bit like looking at the yardage of each hole and best clubs to use..

Then we take it step by step… Club by club, hit by hit..

Now we know there will be times when we make a decision and it goes off track, maybe something happens, or we don’t quite achieve what we thought we could…. So we then have to get ourselves back on track..

A bit like hitting the ball into a bunker….

That next decision can be crucial – after all – you don’t want to be in the bunker for too long…

So you get yourself back on the fairway and back on track…

Next decision is one that can take you near or – if you’re massively good – in the hole…

This is when real specific decisions are made as the goal is there – in front of you… you don’t want to make a mistake that may cost you the hole….

The lie of the ball, is there any debris on the green, any bumps etc…

The end result relies on the swing of the putter… one tiny extra move and you miss, or one tiny less move and you miss…

Same with decision making and life…. It’s all in the detail – at the end…

We can make big decisions and huge goals – but we have to break them down into small chunks and have a way to get to the end – successfully..

It would be great if we could all have a hole in one every time we think of something – but life is never that easy..

So next time you’re thinking of life and how to live it – maybe watch Tiger Woods or Rory Macilroy playing a a round of golf or even just one hole… Watch their precision…..
